Brief Description of the Project:
The primary objectives of the project were to enhance knowledge, attitudes, and practices among COVID-19 affected peoples especially women, people with disabilities (PWD), and marginalized groups in both on-farm and off-farm enterprises. Additionally, the project aims to boost awareness and consciousness regarding gender equality within the community and to increase local government engagement in economic recovery and emergency preparedness to mitigate the pandemic's negative impacts.
Project Goal/Outcomes:
The project goal is to empower women and increase income of poor, PWD and vulnerable people of Sunilsmriti and Runtigadhi Rural Municipalities. To achieve the goal, it has set three major outcomes:
  • Enhanced knowledge, attitudes and practices of COVID-19 affected population, particularly women, PWD and marginalized groups, in on farm and off farm enterprises. People from vulnerable communities, particularly women, understand their rights and entitlements, and access resources and services from local government (LGs) and other stakeholders
  • Increased awareness and consciousness on gender equality in community.
  • Increased engagement of local government in short to medium term economic recovery and emergency preparedness to reduce the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic.
Major outcomes achieved/ Implementation Success:
The project has made the following initial stage of achievements:
  • Intersectional study was carried out for the identification of target group. Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (VCA) was conducted among 790 HHs to identify their vulnerability status. Identified a total of 221 individuals affected by COVID-19 in working areas.
  • Mobilization of women volunteer to raise awareness and counseling on gender equity and COVID preventive measures and reached to 757 family members. Women cell is supported with worth 50 thousand to be utilized to support gender-based violence affected person at local level. In addition to this a safe house is also supported with necessary material to support GBV affected women and girls.
  • The project provided input support to 12 persons with disabilities (PWDs), including vegetable seeds and agricultural technology, to help them start small-scale enterprises. Additionally, the project facilitated the registration of 10 enterprises.
  • Capacity-building training was provided to 220 group members in various areas, including livestock rearing, vegetable farming, poultry farming, fresh house operations, grocery shop management, and sewing and tailoring. Furthermore, the project supplied 60 female goats, 8 Boer bucks, 50 grass feeding instruments (Tatno), and supported the management of 61 improved goat/pig sheds.
  • To enhance access to irrigation for vegetable farmers, the project supported the construction of 5 irrigation canals. Additionally, 8 goat dipping tanks were constructed to protect goats from external parasites.
  • Supported Local Governments with COVID protective gears to be used in primary health centers.
  • Developed disability profile of 2 LGs and supported to prepare one digital disability profile. Within the working local levels altogether 1165 PWDs were identified and recorded.
  • Developed 540 copies of IEC material on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion and COVID-19 and distribution to beneficiaries HHs
  • The 2 local governments are technically and financially assisted in the preparation of DRR plan to support their annual plan and budget allocation.
